If you're a big musical theater fan like me, you might want to incorporate a song from your favourite genre into your wedding day. As I'm a big musical theater lover I seem to attract a lot of clients who love musical theater too. Not surprisingly I've shot a couple of weddings in theatres and even more of them used musical theater wedding songs during their wedding.

I thought the interwebs would be filled with lists of Broadway wedding songs that are appropriate to use during a wedding ceremony, while dancing the first dance or to have someone play in the background during dinner. But not so much, in fact I only found 2! Nevertheless they appeared to be very old fashioned in my eyes. Lots of 80s musicals seemed to have made the cut and they all seemed to be the kind of songs that everyone, even musical theater haters, know. Which is fine of course, if you love a song it doesn't need to be hip or recent. But I think it's very important to have a wedding day that is personal. So if you choose a song, choose it because it signifies something for you or the both of you.

How to incorporate your favorite musical theatre song into your wedding?

Your favourite musical theater song can of course be performed during your wedding ceremony but alternatively a reading of the song might be even more effective in some cases. Different ways to incorporate a Broadway song into your wedding:

-As entrance music; the music on which the wedding party enter the ceremony venue and on which you all walk down the aisle.
-As a performance or reading during the ceremony.
-As filling while the married coupled signs the register.
-As exit music at the end of the ceremony.
-As an intermezzo during dinner.
-During the first dance/the father-daughter dance/mother-son dance.
-Exit music when the newlyweds exit the party.

3 musicians at a wedding with musical theater songs

But obviously the best song would be a song that means something to the two of you. Personally I would consider Sunday from Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George. When my boyfriend and I were just dating we went to a performance of this show and then a couple of months later when I was compiling music for a musical theater concert he pointed my attention to a performance of the song "Sunday" performed by a huge choir during a BBC Night of the Proms. I remember getting a lump in my throat when I heard it when we watched the whole show but now the beauty of the song really spoke to me. We still both get quiet whenever it comes on while we're in the car and I believe the harmonies are so breathtaking it would be perfect during the start of a ceremony.
